These Heavy Duty loops are 'dual use' - you can use them for on-road towing, and on-trail for tow strap D-ring shackles. Note - these are ~$100 more than the lighter-duty, Maximus-3 (10A/Hard Rock/Recon) Mopar winch bumper shackle loops that mounts under the winch, that are NOT suitable for prolonged road towing. There is another post on an older, unimproved version of this product on the forum here The new version (tear-drop shape) is larger and the laser cut steel is thicker 5/8” heavy duty steel. We chose the Maximus-3 frame mounted tow mounts via vendor Quadratec, and got special adapters from vendor e-trailer for our Falcon tow bar assembly. Problem with most tow bar adapters is they limit your front approach angles (see 2nd photo below). To do that you need frame (not bumper) mounted loops tow-bar suitable loops, or frame mounted tow-bar adapters and associated rated tow bars. The various D-ring shackle loops pictured in the previous posts are fine for tow-strapping stuck vehicles on the trail/pulling someone out of a ditch, but they are NOT SUITABLE for prolonged towing on the highway. Not all D-ring loops are the same - Towing a Jeep behind Truck/RV requires HD D-Rings I'll stick to my method others may disagree. If you put the loop of the tow strap into the receiver, you have one less item to fail (no shackle). If you use a receiver/shackle/tow strap combination, there are 3 things that could fail the pin, the shackle and the tow strap.

The pin is in double shear so you might expect 24,000lbs' Since it is in double shear, the strength is 46K lbs.' and 'Cold rolled has a shear strength of around 40,000 psi and your area under load for the pin is about 0.3 square inches for a 5/8' pin so in single shear you are good to around 12,000 lbs. Towing capacity is based on lots of factors that have nothing to do with trying to pull someone out of a snowbank weight on the rear bumper, speed of 55 mph, braking capacity, etc.ĭid some searching, and many posts agree that a pin has sufficient tensile strength to withstand pulling someone out of a stuck position e.g., 'If the drawpin has the same strength as a grade 5 bolt (reasonable assumption, I think) then the shear strength in single shear is 23K lbs.
